Russia hosted the first edition of the One Day Design Challenge on May 28th, with the participation of 226 architecture and design students, who had to face a challenge in only 8 hours: to redesign and create a new bath concept. This product has nowadays a strong competitor in the shower, due to the saving of space and the comfort of its use. The participants had to come up with a new concept that would integrate new features, functions, materials and technology, as well as more user-friendliness and a higher versatility in the installation.
Out of the 122 presented projects the winner was BATH+TRAY, designed by Angelika Filatova from Studioplan. The proposal was a combination of bath and shower, with an expandable structure that makes it possible for elderlies to use it as a shower. At the same time, if the user prefers to enjoy a relaxing bath or bathe a child, the structure may be raised simply by pressing a button. All this with an elegant and sophisticated design.
The second prize was awarded to SPORUL, by Nikita Kolyadin, Nicolaj Yudin, Stepan Pyanykh. The jury highlighted the flexibility of the project, as the bath may be easily transformed depending on the needs. This idea was also present in other projects, but in this one the control system and the adjustment mechanism of all volumes were very well designed.
The third prize was awarded to the FIBOBATH project by Dmitriy Ponomarev and Anna Reshetnikova along with Kirill Saldaev from Object Lab. The jury praised its interesting engineering solution, which solves the problem of the access to the bath/shower with a frame made of metal strips.
The jury was made up of Vera Butko and Anton Naftochiy, founders of ARTIUM Architecture Workshop; Vladimir Pirozhkov, president of the Centre for Industrial Design and Innovation “Astra Rossa”; Vladimir Samoylov, managing director of Matveyev Samoylov Concept Development; Sergey Smirnov, general director of SMIRNOV DESIGN; and Xavier Torras, brand communication director at Roca.
