Introduction

The first edition of the One Day Design Challenge was held in Singapore on Saturday, November 24, with a total participation of over 100 students and young professionals in architecture and design. The briefing proposed for this occasion was to reinterpret the concept of luxury in the bathroom by designing a new product or space. 

The jury was made up of Amy Picanco, Founder & Managing Director of Aym Design; Colin Chew, senior lecturer with the BCA Academy specializing in BIM curricula; Kenneth Koh, founder of Quarters Architects; Kenneth Tan, Senior Associate and Team Leader at Kyoob Architects; and Xavier Torras, Brand Communications Director of Roca and Director of the We Are Water Foundation.

The first prize went to "Aqua Park", a proposal by Diana Yeo and Michel Sim Yi-Ting that stands out for imagining different environments in a single bathroom space designed for luxury and well-being. Clara Lim won the second prize for her project "Floordrie", a simple proposal that offers an optimal hygiene solution. Amanda Loh, Caleb Goh and Lee Zhuo Yao won the third prize for "Onyx Oasis". This project integrated nature to offer a sense of well-being. "Mirage" was the project with the We Are Water Foundation award. Amanda Putri, Ashok Aditi and Gauraangee Palsani are its designers.

Amy Picanco

Founder & Managing Director of Aym Design. Council member of the Interior Design Confederation Singapore.

After relocating from the UK in 2009, Amy spent several years working on various design projects across the Asia-Pacific region before finally settling down in Singapore and starting her own studio, Aym Design. 

Over the past three years, she has built up her team and established a reliable reputation for creating highly efficient planning solutions and branded office concepts. Now the studio is branching out into the residential market and has accepted several high-end residential clients in Singapore, Thailand, and Sydney. 

Now having joined the Interior Design Confederation of Singapore (since 2016), she hopes to become a voice to support other young or emerging designers and their firms in Singapore. She strives for the industry accreditation and recognition that designers here in Singapore deserve.

Colin Chew

Colin is a senior lecturer with the BCA Academy specializing in BIM curricula and is also a registered architect with the Board of Architects Singapore.

Prior to joining academia, Colin worked in RSP Architects, Planners & Engineers (Pte) Ltd for 6 years and has an extensive portfolio ranging from airport to institutions and residential projects.

A NUS graduate with a Master of Architecture, Colin is also a certified green mark manager, UD assessor and holds an ACTA certification. He hopes that designers in this region will have more global prominence.

Kenneth Koh

The founder of Quarters Architects, Kenneth Koh is a registered architect in Singapore, and is constantly experimenting with illustration and art and their intersections with architecture and urban space.

He is also a member of the Singapore Institute of Architects Publications Committee. He has led design teams on projects of varying scales with Ong & Ong & Farm. Recently, he won CDL;s Singapore Sculpture Award – Winner (Open Category) and will see his creation built in East Coast Park.

Kenneth has won more than 20 awards since 2004, among them DBS “I designed a bank” competition – 1stplace, Royal Institute of British Architects President’s Medal, CDL Sculpture Award – Winner (Student Category), Furniture Design Award, “Eklipse”, Green Thumb: Roof Garden Design for Regent Hotel – 1stplace.

Kenneth Tan

Kenneth is presently Senior Associate and Team Leader at Kyoob Architects Pte Ltd. He graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Master of Architecture as well as from the University of Nottingham, UK with a Master of Science (Sustainable Building Design). 

Kenneth has more than 10 years of experience across a range of architectural and interior projects in various residential, recreational and industrial building typologies from both private and public sectors. He is registered with the Board of Architects, Singapore. He is enthusiastic about universal design and interested in innovative building technology of sustainable building design.
