Introduction

On 17th October 2015, Roca held the fourth edition of the One Day Design Challenge. With the aim of promoting young talent, the contest was held simultaneously in the Roca Galleries in Madrid and Barcelona, connected via streaming.

This edition was marked by a record-breaking level of participation, with 234 projects submitted and a total of 456 students registered from 23 provinces. On this occasion, the challenge that the participants faced against the clock involved designing new products for bathroom spaces that offered the greatest level of ease for cleaning.

Characterized by creativity and the broad variety of ideas and proposals, the event was won by the IGAD project designed by the students Ignasi Sagré, from the ELISAVA design college, and Adrián González, from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Their proposal consisted of a self-cleaning wash basin that, thanks to its rotation system on its own axis, reduced cleaning time in bathroom spaces.

Moreover, for the first time, a second prize was awarded, which went to the Spink project by Alberto Aguado, student at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and Jesús López, of the Universidad Europea de Madrid. Spink stood out for its simplicity when resolving the problem at hand, as its design of a single piece that is easily removed and attached considerably reduced cleaning difficulty and time.

Susana’s artistic training in Fine Arts combines with the technique of a product designer of Vicente’s calibre to create a cocktail that they refer to as “smooth and sweet eclecticism”.

Applying this formula to create iconic spaces and products, such as the H2O bottle and the S1 cabin for ThyssenKrupp Elevators. Their recognition has led to awards such as the Elle Décor’s Young Designer Talent Spain 2013, Good Design Chicago’s Athaneum Museum 2009, the National Craftsmanship Award 2009 and the silver ADI-Fad Delta Award 2013 among others.
