Introduction

On Saturday 6th May, Lisbon was chosen to host the first edition in Portugal of the Roca One Day Design Challenge. The contest gathered more than 160 participants from all over the country with a large number of professionals and students encouraged to participate in the challenge.

The contestants were faced to create a complete new design of a conventional washbasin taking into consideration different elements such as functionalities, efficiency and originality in a matter of nine hours.

After redesigning this conventional concept it was time to evaluate all the projects. The jury was composed by recognized professionals as the architect José Mateus from Atelier ARX, the designers Joao Bessa and Paulo Parra, Nuno Sá Leal from Portuguese Association of Designers and Xavier Torras, Brand and Communication Director in Roca.

The winner project was elaborated by André Silva, José Almeida and Pedro Costa from the Escola Superior de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainh, for their innovative design called BASIN BALL. The product is a very versatile project that adapts to different cultures, colors and face-to-face contexts. It is a piece that can be used both in changing rooms and on the beach where it could be very useful, especially because of the way the water is drained by the piece.

The second award of the night went to the Ruben Laurenço, Bárbara Marques and Inês Margarida for the project ADAPT and has stood out for its usability, inclusiveness and adaptability. The third prize was awarded to AQUA VITAE designed by Mafalda Costa and Pedro Soares. The project was chosen for its inclusive design, its usability and for the fact that, it is the best solution from a technical and installation point of view.

The One Day Design Challenge by Roca is an initiative to promote and disseminate the national and international talent in the field of design and architecture.
