The Roca One Day Design Challenge celebrates its tenth anniversary

01 / 30 / 2022

The Roca One Day Design Challenge, Roca's race against the clock design contest, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The competition, which over the years has seen nearly 13,000 young architects and designers take part from all over the world, will be held in 12 different countries in 2022.

One day, one design and a lot of creativity

The Roca One Day Design Challenge tasks architecture and design students and professionals under the age of 30 with the challenge of designing, in a single day, new solutions for the bathroom space that can contribute to achieving a more sustainable and responsible future.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Roca One Day Design Challenge is a demonstration of Roca's commitment to talent, innovation and sustainability, aiming to highlight the importance of design in overcoming the major global challenges of today, such as the climate emergency and the new social realities around the world.

The Roca One Day Design Challenge is held under the same format in all countries. Participants must design a product based on a “brief" that is announced first thing in the morning. Young designers and architects work against the clock individually or in groups of two to deliver their projects late in the afternoon, which are then evaluated by a jury made up of renowned professionals in the field of design and architecture. The most important aspects that the jury takes into account when assessing the projects are originality, design, usability and the sustainable nature of the proposals.

Professionals who have been previously part of the Roca One Day Design Challenge jury include Marta Thorne, executive director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize since 2005; Fernanda Marques, architect and founder of her own studio; Tomek Rygalik, designer and creator of Studio Rygalik; and Leon Sun, editor-in-chief of Elle Deco in China.

The winners of the different editions receive financial prizes. But this year, in addition, the winners of the first prize out of all the editions of the contest around the world will be invited to participate in the Master Design Challenge, the grand world final that will be held in Barcelona, for the second time, at the beginning of 2023.

An internationally renowned competition

The Roca One Day Design Challenge was born in Spain in 2012 and since then it has progressively expanded around the world. In 2022, Portugal, Argentina, Oman, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria, China, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia, Morocco and India will host the contest, either online or in person, depending on the health situation in each country.

The contest has been associated, throughout its ten-year history, with different design weeks around the world, such as Dubai Design Week; as well as with different architectural events such as the 4 Design Days in Poland, and international events such as Expo 2020 Dubai.

The competition has also been awarded two of the most renowned international prizes in the field of design: the Red Dot award, in the category of Spatial Communication-Event Design; and the IF Design Award 2020, in the Communication category, which recognizes the contest as an innovative and creative communication tool.

Ten years and many emotions. And you, will you us in 2022?
