The sixth edition of the One Day Design Challenge by Roca took place at the Roca Galleries in Barcelona and Madrid on the 7th October.
Four awards of 500, 1,000. 2,000 and 3,000 euros were presented. The jury highlighted the high quality of the projects developed in only 9 hours and the outstanding participation.
STEAM BOX by Robert Navarro Torres and Enrique Morral Santoyo (UPC) won the first prize. The project recovers the steam originating from the use of the shower or bath to iron and heat clothes by means of the radiation this device generates. At the same time, the condensed steam is stored in the base and can be reused while it also features an integrated interactive screen.
The second prize was awarded to Vicent Ferrando Sanjuan and Mariana Hinojosa, former students of Elisava for their project ROCKY, which provides a solution to another member of the family, the pets.
The third prize was awarded to VAPORE, by Luis Miguel Gonzalez y Jorge Ruiz, from the Escuela Superior de Castilla la Mancha, an elegant design with different washing functions.
The We Are Water Foundation presented its award and Xavier Torras, brand communication director at Roca and Director of the We Are Water Foundation, explained that it is awarded “to the project that highlights the value and commitment to sustainability, as the saving of water is something that needs to be integrated into the bathroom space.”
In this case it was for SINARA, by Alicja Anna Kubicka, from the Poznan University of echnology, a project that brings nature to the bathroom. The jury was made up of Maria Callis, president of the Retail Design Institute in Spain; Toni Clariana, founder of Magma Design and member of the board of the BCD; Mario Correa, founding partner of Mario Correa Arquitectura; Jordi Pérez, designer of the Roca Design Center; Alberto Bejerano, technical engineer in industrial design; Sergio Baragaño, architect and founder of [baragaño]; Carlos Campuzano, architect, founder of Campuzano Arquitectos; Carmen Panadero, co-director of the Master in Real Estate Development (MRED) at the IESchool of Architecture and Design; Sergio Giménez, designer at the design department in Roca and Xavier Torras.
The competition Roca One Day Design Challenge is another initiative that confirms the brand ́s commitment to the promotion and dissemination of national and international talent in the fields of design and architecture.
Sergio Baragaño is an architect, designer and founder of the [baragaño] studio. He is also a consultant for Arcelor Mittal Modular Architecture; resident architect at Can Lis by Jorn Utzon and the Danish Art Foundation; tutor of Product for the Master of Design and Innovation of IED; and curator of the Cycle of Industrialisation, Learning to fly, at the Roca Gallery in Madrid
With a degree in Technical Engineer in Industrial Design from the Universidad Jaume I. He founded the studio DSIGNIO along with Patxi Cotarelo in 2002, combining product design and interior design. They have designed products for several companies (Beltà - Frajumar, Concepta, Peronda, La Ebanistería, Vibia…) which sell their designs in over 100 countries and regularly display them in trade fairs like the ones in Milan, Paris and Moscow. Their projects are often mentioned in specialised press, in general media and in over 1,000 blogs related to design. Moreover, they give conferences and lectures in different universities in Spain, Japan and Mexico.
María Callís specialises in the creation, update, optimization and development of retail concepts, due to her education at ESADE and especially due to the experience acquired at Retail Planning Associates, RPA, an American company specialising in retail based in London, where she worked.
She has developed projects for companies such as Nestlè, Desigual, Whitesummer Pals, Kukuxumusu, Janina, Isihome, Viamoda, Sa2Pe or Partyfiesta, among others.
As a specialist in retail she goes hand in hand with the business owner starting with the configuration of the business idea and its full strategic development and finishing with its implementation. To this effect and depending on the project, she organises and coordinates the working teams of the different disciplines such as graphic designers, interior designers, architects, merchandisers, among others.
Born in Madrid in 1975 in a family engaged in the construction and banking business with a great passion for art. He has devoted his professional career to retail and fashion. At Inditex he worked as window display designer and as Head of Visual Merchandising for Zara Internacional, something that turned him into a global citizen. At Calvin Klein, he worked as Head of Visual Merchandising for Spain. He had the chance of participating in the Scalpers project from the very start, designing the stores and leading the process of growth and international expansion of the brand. After the adventure of Scalpers and ESNE, he was hired by IKEA as a Creative Leader, implementing great changes such as the elimination of the fixed itinerary inside the stores or the opening of stores in city centres.
Mario Corea, Hon. FAIA, is the founding partner of Mario Corea Arquitectura and he has 50 years of international professional experience. He earned his architectural degree from the Universidad Nacional in Rosario, Argentina, and received his Master of Architecture in Urban Design from the GSD Graduate School of Design of Harvard University and a Diploma in Urban Studies from the AA Architectural Association in London.
His work has been awarded several times during the last years. In 2016 he received the National Prize for Architecture from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes of the Ministry of Culture of Argentina.
Currently Mario Corea continues his professional practice in his offices in Barcelona and Buenos Aires.
Toni Clariana is a designer from Barcelona. He started his career in the automotive sector (SEAT), working after that at Quod and Associate designers. He then founded his own organisation: magma Design, which stands out for being interdisciplinary and for its approach at the service of the industry. Magma has received numerous awards, both for industrial design and design of spaces. Some of them are the Hispack, Delta Adi-Fad or the Letra Award.
He has designed several faucet collections for Roca such as Syra, Pals, Victoria, Java or M2
Sergio Jiménez Gozálvez
Born in Barcelona, he has a degree in Industrial Engineering from the E.T.S.E.I.B. (Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria Industrial de Barcelona - UPC) specialising in Electronics. He started his professional career collaborating in the design of machinery for industrial welding for the automotive sector.
He has been developing his capacities at the Roca Design Center since 2006, combining the development of new products for the ROCA brand that incorporate electronics (In-Wash, In-Tank, etc) with the research of new technologies, functionalities and user interfaces to be applied to the bathroom environment.
Carmen has over 15 years´ experience in the real estate sector. Carmen works for CBRE since 2014 and nowadays she is the Head of the Development Services Department, a department focused on providing an integrated service to the owner in order to maximize the value of their real estate assets through repositioning. Before working for CBRE, she worked at the Estudio Lamela in Madrid, where she held the position of Director of Business Development, in charge of clients. Estudio Lamela is a global architecture, design and planning firm, with a trajectory of over 55 years and more than 1,600 projects in different countries.
Currently she is also the director of the Master in Real Estate Development of the IE School of Architecture & Design (IE University), Founder and Vice president of the WIRES Association (Spain) and Director of Institutional Development at the ULI in Madrid. She also provides services at the Executive Committee of IEREC (IE Real Estate Club) and is an advisory member of the Real Institución de Topógrafos (RICS).
A graduate in Industrial Design in 1994 at the Elisava School of Design (Barcelona), he has spent his career in industrial design studios and companies in Spain and Italy, such as Uli Marschteiner Studio, Studio Italform, Studio Nuñez Castain, Bausch & Lomb, Salerm, BD Barcelona, Lamp, Mecalux and Cosmic, among others.
Since 2002, he has formed part of the Roca Design Center. He has worked as a lecturer at Elisava and the Centro Ricerche Domus Academy (Milan).
He has won several design awards and accolades for his work.
Brand Communications Director of Roca and Director of the We Are Water Foundation since its creation in 2010. He has developed his professional career in the fields of marketing, business strategy and communication.
